It's a jungle out there. With big tech social media and other media. People seem to love to criticize especially in a not very tasteful way and many of us in order to preserve our sanity will disable comments or deliberately not read them.
The rejoinder has often been that we deprive them of their right to express themselves but with some rights come responsibilities too. Respect. Many of us do not know how to communicate respectfully or we're not sure how. Or what we think is support or respectful commenting may not come off that way to the other person. Many of us will disable our comments not to deprive any one of their rights but to preserve our own right to the pursuit of happiness and that can be stymied when we are criticized every day.
